Make Decorative Bed Pillows

How to Make Decorative Bed Pillows ?

Why spend a lot of money when you can easily make decorative bed pillows that are just the right size, texture and color to match the decor of your bedroom?

Preparation for Making a Decorative Bed Pillow

Step 1

Select the fabric for your decorative bed pillow. For example, if you have a cotton bedspread, choose a corduroy or silk fabric to add texture. Also, choose a color that is different but complements the colors of your existing bed cover.

Step 2

Determine what size you want the decorative bed pillow to be.  If you already have several decorative pillows or a small bed, consider making a smaller pillow.

Step 3

Choose the stuffing for your pillow, including polyester fiber, shredded foam and feathers. Polyester fiber is less expensive and can be bought at most discount stores. Polyester fiber is also less messy than shredded foam or feathers if it were to spring a leak.

Step 4

Decide how you will stitch the pillow together.

Step 5

Cut the fabric according to the size pillow you want to make, adding a half inch to each side for the seam allowance. If you are making a pillow that is 8 inches by 10 inches, the pieces will be 8.5 inches by 10.5 inches.

Step 6

Fold down a 1/2-inch seam on one end of the cut fabric and press it down with an iron.

Putting Your Decorative Bed Pillow Together
Step 1

Align the pieces of fabric together with the inside facing out. Pin them in place with straight pins to hold everything in place.

Step 2

Sew three sides of the fabric together with the pieces inside out. A straight stitch is recommended if sewing on a machine. Use a simple backstitch if hand-stitching. Turn your fabric right-side out.

Step 3

Stuff the pillow with the stuffing. If using polyester fiber, tear off handfuls at a time. Stuff the corners well and continue packing in the stuffing until you achieve the desired fullness.

Step 4

Close the open end of the pillow. Begin by stitching up the open edges you ironed earlier and pin them closed with straight pins. Stitch the opening closed using a slipstitch. Fluff the pillow to even out the stuffing.

Tips to Clean Foam Bed Pillows

Bed Pillow | Bed Pillows

How to Clean Foam Bed Pillows ?

Foam pillows wash up nicely, unlike traditional polyester filled pillows which are never the same again after being exposed to water
Step 1

Take off the pillow cases that are on the foam bed pillows. Some foam bed pillows are sold with velour covers that are machine washable.

Step 2

Clean each foam bed pillow one at a time by placing each one individually into your bathtub.

Step 3

Saturate the foam bed pillow with warm, running water, and massage a small amount of mild detergent into the pillow. A little less than a quarter of a capful is sufficient

Step 4

Rinse the foam bed pillow once again with a warm water rinse. Be sure to get all the detergent out of the foam.

Step 5

Allow the foam bed pillow to dry thoroughly before putting its cover back on. Lay it flat outside on your patio table (out of the sun) or upright in a dish rack.

How to Fluff Up Bed Pillows

Bed Pillow | Bed Pillows

You can wash and dry pillows in just a few steps, but it takes several hours to complete the entire washing and drying cycle.
Step 1

Clean pillows in the washing machine. Inspect the pillow to make sure all ends and ticking of the pillow are securely sewn.

Step 2

Place two pillows into the washing machine at a time.  A regular washing machine will push and pull on the fabric of the pillow, which causes damage and stress to both the pillow and the machine, suggests Northern Lodge, a down pillow manufacturer.

Step 3

Use half the regular amount of laundry detergent. Do not add bleach or fabric softener.

Step 4

Place pillows in the dryer.  Avoid discoloring pillows by only using white or neutral-colored tennis balls.

Step 5

Remove pillows on occasion, and shake and bend to fluff the pillows by hand to increase fluffing; replace in dryer and continue to dry.

Step 6

Place a pillow protector on the pillows to protect from dirt, humidity and oil. Add pillow case and fluff.

Tips Before You Buy A New Bed Pillow

Bed Pillows | Bed Pillow
Down vs. Synthetic. Personally, I love a down pillow. Many manufacturers mix feathers with down to cut prices—the more feathers, the cheaper the pillow since it takes a lot more down to fill a pillow. Density. If you sleep on your side, you're probably going to want a firm pillow. Fill power. Look for pillows in the 500-800+ range to make sure you're getting a quality product. Thread count. Despite the fact that you're going to use a pillowcase, it's important to note the thread count of the pillow cover to make sure the weave is tight enough so that the feathers won't escape. 250 is a good minimum. Price. Pillows can get pricey—especially if we're talking down. As design expert Michelle Morgan Harrison suggested, it's nice to layer pillows (on a queen size bed, you probably want two large euro-size pillows, which are great for leaning on when you're reading, then two standard size sleeping pillows, then two standard size pillows with decorative shams).
